Tons of Tiny Hippos!

 A real hippopotamus can weigh as much as 8,000 pounds, or four tons (about 3,600 kg, or 3.6 tonnes). There aren't any living hippos at The Met, but there are tons of very small hippos made by ancient Egyptians!

The Magical Powers of Egyptian Faience.

 The ancient Egyptian faience collar in The Met collection pictured above was part of the Museum's holdings long before anyone knew it. In 1920, workers on an expedition led by the Museum came across a small tomb in Thebes belonging to a man of seemingly humble means. As the director of the expedition, Herbert E. Winlock, later wrote: "The meal of beer and bread and meat beside the coffin was so simple, and so were the few objects in the coffin, that there seemed little likelihood of there being anything of value inside."

In ancient Egypt, silver was used for myriad purposes. It could be transformed into mirrors, necklaces, amulets, or vessels, or even into standing figures or amulets—like the one of Nefertum, a mythological figure associated with the lotus flower

The Temple of Dendur: Celebrating 50 Years.

 In celebration of the 50th anniversary of this momentous award, staff in the Departments of Egyptian Art and Objects Conservation have written new essays covering various aspects of the temple—including the temple's cult and decoration; its architecture; representations of the temple in 19th-century art and photography; cleaning and conservation of the structure; and how this beloved icon made its way from Egypt to the Museum.
